Ahha! You want to learn more about being a Peacekeeper!
Well, we’re here to teach you more!
Our Goal?
To have a pool of at least 25 trained peacekeepers who are committed to working as a team to keep SADP rallies peaceful, safe, and successful. Each rally typically requires 6-10 peacekeepers, so it is our hope that by having a larger group of trained individuals, no individual will ever have to work every rally. We understand that occasionally, peacekeepers simply want to be participants!
What is a Peacekeeper?
A peacekeeper is an ordinary community member who has made the choice to step up his or her activism and involvement and join the team that oversees the safety of SADP rallies and community gatherings.
What does it take to be a Peacekeeper?
Currently, there are two 1-hour online training sessions that must be watched before assuming the role. These training sessions cover crowd management, de-escalation, and emergency response, among other basic skills. Peacemakers then do hands-on training with the walkie talkie system SADP Peacekeepers use to communicate during events.
What does a peacekeeper do during a typical event?
-
Help to direct crowd traffic
-
Help participants cross streets at intersections
-
Act as a point person for general event information
-
Survey their assigned area for safe crowd behavior and to ensure that participants are staying on the sidewalk - not stepping into the street
-
Work with participants to de-escalate tension if a scenario arises
How do I get started?
Please reach out to one of our event team leads and start the conversation! We are so happy to help you learn more – and by calling, you are not necessarily committing. We understand that learning more is the first step!
